Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes evaluates 2022 offense after two games

The Kansas City Chiefs offense has been lethal since the preseason with Patrick Mahomes under center. The former league MVP has been sharp in 2022, connecting with multiple receivers and keeping defenses on their toes.

The explosion to start the new season for the Chiefs offense has taken some critics by surprise following the offseason trade of Tyreek Hill. The infusion of veterans like JuJu Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and rookies Skyy Moore and Isiah Pacheco have added even more dynamic elements to the already potent offensive unit.

Mahomes expressed his thoughts on the attack’s progress after two weeks.

“Yeah, I think we’re still getting better. We’ve done some great things,” Mahomes told reporters Wednesday. “We have also done things in which we can improve. We have to continue to find ways to make explosive plays.”

Mahomes is off to another MVP-caliber start with 595 passing yards, seven touchdowns, no interceptions and a 73.0% completion rating. He has a 127.9 quarterback rating and a few new highlights to add to his career reel as well.

The All-Pro QB knows that defenses will step up their game whenever they face off, and he continues to preach patience and growth within the offense.

“I know it’s tough sometimes with the defenses we have, but we want to make sure we still take advantage of (explosive plays in the passing game) and keep that in our offense,” Mahomes said. “And then whenever we have to be patient and drive the length of the field, we have to continue to do that. So you’re going to continue to get better with new receivers and younger guys that can evolve on offense, and we continue to open up even more the “attack”.

It’s a small sample, but Mahomes is off to a statistically perfect start to the new season, and by that measure, so is the rest of the offense. The new-look unit has impressed early, but Mahomes understands they will have to evolve and make adjustments throughout the year in order to be at their best over a full 17-game season.
